In traditional setups, the BBU is located at the base of the tower. In modern, centralized or cloud-based RAN (Radio Access Network) architectures, the BBU is in a centralized hub. Fronthaul requires high-capacity, low-latency links, which are typically provided by fiber optic cables, to transport raw, unprocessed radio signals.
  • Backhaul: This is the network segment that connects the Baseband Unit (BBU) to the operator’s core network, and from there to the public internet. It’s responsible for carrying aggregated data traffic from multiple cell sites. Backhaul can use a variety of technologies, including fiber optic, microwave, or satellite links, but fiber is preferred due to its high bandwidth and reliability.
